Lets talk about the different steps during a day where we need to drive many hours on the road. Either we wake up in a rest area or in a campground, the steps are similar but the rhythm is not quite the same. How to save time on the bathroom and food stops? Where to sleep after a long day on the road? Read ahead to learn more!

Waking up in a rest area

Rarely are we going to sleep to the cricket sounds while we sleep in a rest area. The background noises? The road and truck engines. Nonetheless, most of our nights are quite recuperating as these background noises end up having a calming effect. When we wake up, it is not very complicated, we go for a bathroom stop and take the time to freshen up and we are quickly back on the road. Regularly we take a coffee on the road to prevent wasting time knowing many kilometres awaits us. Of course, to save up a bit on money it is preferable to make your own but sometimes you have to make choices :) During these driving days we can hit up 8-9 hours on the road. To eat, always in the objective of saving money and time, we stop at a grocery store and we get cheese, fresh fruits, nuts etc. With a well garnished Spotify playlist (called #ys roadtrip) we are ready to hit the road!

Waking up in a campground

When we decide to rent a campground site, it is likely that we sit back and relax the next morning as we often arrive late during the preceding evening. We make ourselves a good coffee and a good breakfast while enjoying the surroundings. We also appreciate the shower installations and the pool for the kids. During these days we hit the road in the beginning of the afternoon and we can drive 4-5 hours.

It's so nice that we don't want to leave!

Being random also means some changes to the itinerary. Even if before leaving for our roadtrip we have some key places we want to visit, it is possible that our itinerary changes as we go. That is the main reason we rarely book anything in advance to prevent missing out on last minute opportunities! To note that during our roadtrip to Yellowstone we have had no difficulty to find campgrounds as most of the no services campgrounds are less popular and are often walk up sites.
